Adam Hsu – The Secret File Of Ba Gua Zhang
It’s hard to write an objective review when the information comes from your own teacher who is also one of the field’s top writers. So I gave up and decided not to try.
Hsu The traditional Bagua start with the animal palms. This sets the rules for posture and locomotion, as well as 8 hand positions. He adds a unique perspective and comments to the conversation that are rarely shared by others.
Plum has many Bagua courses that cover footwork, empty handed forms as well as weapons and applications. The dynamic interaction between its segments is what I find most distinctive and unique about this series. Adam Hsu’s approach is different. His method uses the core Eight Changing Palms—which he teaches on these DVDs—to take you through different skill sets, all foundational to Bagua. Once you have learned the Eight Changing Palms, your knowledge will be used to practice Bagua Poles as well as Partner Training and Applications. All of these skills will return to the Eight Changing Palms. This is just one way Bagua can be truly circular.

The The background and principles are the focus of the first three DVDs from Volume One. The The demonstrations and information are rich, explaining the essentials. He starts with Gong Bao Tao, who learnt directly from Yin Fu but also developed unique techniques. We are shown his pole technique and a new method of pracicing using marine ropes.
Next, Adam Hsu BGZ is a superior martial art to other ones. This argument supports the case. BGZ is a relatively late development. Adam Hsu BGZ’s key differences, levels and effects of torsion are explained.
Here are three extremely unusual exercises that are definitely BGZ. They help to loosen the spine and encourage more movement in the hips. Gong Bao Tian created all of these Bagua training programs, and they are all quite surprising.
Adam Hsu Chen Tai Chi Lao Jia
Volume One contains a discussion of internal training. It includes breathing exercises and techniques to deepen the practice. For those with a martial history Hsu Sifu’s approach is commonsensical and direct—without even the need to believe in qi—and focuses on the role of intent. Because it is so straightforward and honest, I believe it will bring people back to life. Hsu Also, the qi discussion about the three levels (heaven and earth) is introduced. This is the most fundamental part of BGZ training.
In Volume Two, Adam Hsu Many ideas are advanced from Part One. He also shows aspects of the system that are not available anywhere else, even in mainland China. Now we can see more about the anatomy of stepping. He demonstrates how to use scissors to step with proper leg movements. He shows the Square Step which is important for hip control. For tight movement and the wall, he adds a triangle step.-Volume 1: Turning exercises
Returning to the San Cai (3 Levels), he assigns a specific hand position for each level. This links each level to a portion on the torso. These are then coordinated with three types of stepping patterns. This San Cai practice alone can provide many months of training. The The foundation is made up of the first three positions in this section.
Next, we have palm training and actual marching locomotion. Hsu Sifu doesn’t demonstrate a great deal on other people, but here you do not need it—the applications are quite clear. He shows how to do Palm training using all major hand positions. The palms change on every strike. He demonstrates a few of the core techniques for BGZ Training: chopping and throwing, raising, etc.
Then he introduces the Four Hands (Guen, Zhuan, Zheng, Guo) Pattern. This useful training method connects the body with the arms in continuous loops. This type of training is rare outside the lineage. You move your hand in a circular motion that looks simple. It involves four different positions. Each position requires the use of appropriate actions for the waist and back. This is a common mistake that people make. They cannot connect their hands and legs properly. Here we have five different versions (two of which I’ve never even seen before) of this lively exercise, each requiring different torso techniques. The You might continue Four Hands throughout your entire career in Martial Arts.
There is also an extended section about how to use the BGZ post. I don’t often use the word “amazing” The BGZ posts could make the Wing Chun dummy seem like a broomstick. The This was the first time I had seen it. “You could practice years on this.” Hsu Sifu said: “You could practice your whole life on this.” Sifu Adam Hsu shows various ways to work a group of three—with just hands, moving from post to post, setting up the posts, spacing them, their use for posture. Amazingly, it’s a complete system.
True to his fundamental premise, Adam Hsu These two features are very important to the double series. First, he arranged the material in the correct order. He put emphasis on the basic movements and the importance of them. Second, he gives much more background—not just stories of magical prowess, rather the guiding principles that make Bagua what it is.
