Most copywriters are lulled into thinking that just being a good copywriter is enough. Writing like their hero will be the key. Talking like their mentor is key. They must read the latest and greatest book.
Let me say this in black and white.That part’s a lie.
I’m tired of reading newbie’s proclaiming and selling themselves as ‘the worlds greatest copywriter’ They may be able to write, but they don’t know anything about psychology, art, or science of selling.
Today’s web-based invisibility and increased demand for copywriters means that more people are learning to write. ‘copywriters’ You’ve just finished reading a couple of new manuals and now you can use the internet to declare that you are. ‘super-experts’. But these same guys run around looking for low-cost, affordable goods.-End work every day.
I should know it’s the same guys that email me asking for copy work almost every week! They might have even taken you in once!
My Business History comes from the Front Lines. In 1991, I had developed a system to take my salons from a new start.-Direct mail and guerilla marketing can help you rise to the top of your town.
All of my salons were full from morning till night thanks to this system of advertising writing and creation. They were so great that I was able to make my way into copywriting and consulting.
Who will write your ads AlanLocal businesses started asking me where and who my adverts were from. I was doing everything myself using an old Pentium computer in my backroom office. It was working.
Direct mail was something that I could even master in 1991. Every Tuesday I would pull out my dot matrix printer and feed the endless roll of perforated papers into the machine. The machine would then print approximately 500 mailers that day.
I’m laughing as I write because most of the time the mailer would over lap so we had to trim the paper with old scissors to keep parts of the address on that had over lapped onto another sheet.
This is not the only way I wrote copy. With great success, I had started creating direct mail campaigns for local businesses and newspapers campaigns for hairdressing salons.
I created a campaign for a local garage that sold over £1.2 million pounds of sports cars. I was not paid cash. Instead, they made a deal to customize an orange VW Beetle and pay me.
I also created and saved a failed campaign for a cosmetic business that eventually generated around £800,000 in sales for them. We should not forget that I was still a hairdresser at the time, but had become a fine artist.-You can tune my direct marketing skills here very fast, since 1989!
These same skills got me on stage with Jay Abraham in 2003! Although it was an accident, there was also a plan element that I shared with my students.
By 2004-2005 I was sharing the same direct marketing, copywriting, and consulting skills with students around the world!
After years of successfully creating ads, I am confident that I know what works.
My Own Life Just 3 Years Ago:I had as much as a naked man sitting in the middle of a field alone after a horrible divorce and forced bankruptcy… NOT A PENNY … or anything at all from my first 27 years in business.
I doubt I would have been able fully to recover if I had been a hairdresser or held another job. But 27 years of strong skills that I had accumulated and stored in my brain was the only thing that saved me.
To make a long story short, I had started putting all my skills into action very quickly in October 2011. I needed to create a new lifestyle in just months. This was the standard I had worked 27 years to achieve.
