NEVER FARMED NEITHER HAD HE
I was a classic struggling musician.
My summers were spent as a tree planter, making my living to pay my music. “career” The remaining nine months.
It was not fame, fortune, a lifestyle of luxury, or any meaningful contribution to my community. A crummy van, decent venues, and a few close friends were all that I had. I had plenty of fun, but I certainly wasn’t building a future towards anything meaningful. Problem was, I was not ready to build my own future.
The challenge was, I just didn’t know what to do, to find meaning in my life.
FIND INSPIRATION
Recognizing that I needed to make a change, I took the entire summer off to search for inspiration.
I took a bike ride down the west coast of Canada, and the US.
I met amazing people. I witnessed amazing things. I was also the fittest person I’d been since high school. It was no accident that I cycled 50 miles each day. It felt great.
Along the way I stopped at many organic farms. I was inspired by all of the farmers who shared my values for a better world, and were actually making a living based on those very values.
San Diego was my first stop. I had already made the decision to get started. Urban Farm in my hometown Kelowna (British Columbia), Canada
AFRAID TO START
It was autumn when I arrived home. Now it was time to start my urban farm.
I knew that I wanted to start my own farm and was immediately overwhelmed by the amount of work involved.
I hadn’t even grown one vegetable.
I’ll repeat that…
I didn’t have any experience in growing vegetables. None. And, in truth, he never sold anything. And he didn’t even want to.
Am I overwhelmed?
Yup.
Afraid?
For sure.
Fear of failure?
You bet.
And worst of all, I just didn’t know where to start.
FAILED TO GET STARTED
Winter came and fell and I began to read everything I could, attended workshops and watched every YouTube video. Urban Farming. I was determined to learn all I could.
When spring came, I bought my first piece land and began working. And I worked even more.
All the money I saved from tree planting, approximately $11,000, I invested.
I purchased a rototiller, seeds and other tools. Soon, I was growing my own vegetables.
I was so happy to have a tomato that my mother grew in my hand.
Before long, I was selling at the local farmer’s market, to the people in my community, and a few restaurants in town.
It felt great. Finally, I felt like my purpose was being fulfilled.
The initial excitement soon subsided and the overwhelming feeling returned.
I was working 80 hours a week and there was still a lot to do.
There just wasn’t enough time in the day to get everything done.
The heat of summer hit me hard. Hard. I was burned out. Multiple times, I was so exhausted from overworking that I had to stop work and throw up.
Something has to be done.
Problem? My drive was great, but I didn’t have any business knowledge. I worked hard but was not smart.
I earned $17.476 at the end of my first season. It was a good start to my first season of doing something I hadn’t done before. But then, I calculated my hourly wage.
$1.45 an hour.
Ouch.
Let’s take a second to consider that.
I had worked every hour of the day during the season, but only $1.45 an hr.
SEEK GUIDANCE
Winter arrived, the snow fell and I wanted to get out of there.
But I didn’t.
Instead, I resolved that this would be my work.
I knew there had got to be a way.
It was time for me to evaluate how I was doing. You must make every effort, every minute, and every step count.
It was time for us to start over, to create a new slate and to learn from our mistakes.
It wasn’t my experience, but the experiences of others who have gone before me.
It was time to invest my time in business education. I needed teachers to teach me… I needed a mentor.
THE MENTORS
I looked for mentors who had experience and could teach me.
Mentors who lost money and made errors were now successful.
I was able to observe the way successful farmers approached their businesses after meeting them. I was particularly interested in how they spent their time.
They did some very strange things. They earned more and worked less.
They taught me how to value my time and what I can do with it.
They were my tactics for the next season. I changed my approach dramatically after adopting their philosophy.
It worked.
I made $61,540 in my second season! It was amazing.
In Year Two, I was getting paid well for all my hard work and long hours.
I refined my techniques over the years to make sure I not only earn a great living but also work long hours.
Others aspiring farmers began asking me for my assistance. They wanted to learn how they could have the same success as me.
They became my mentor, which is something I wished I had done when I first started.
They had a higher income and lower expenses. They also worked less.
The messages came in.
Aspiring farmers were telling their tales of success. They were more connected with their family and had more time to spend with their friends. And they were more successful than ever.
Growing vegetables gave me a new passion: mentoring farmers to their success.

5 reasons to be an urban farmer
1. You can make a great income for yourself
There is a greater demand for locally-produced, high-quality food than ever before. Restaurants will pay top dollar for your produce. You are in the right place to get started and earn a great living.
2. It’s a great lifestyle
I’ve never been more excited to get up in the morning and get to work. Every day is different. You get to be your boss, and spend your days working on the land. Beyond the daily routine, the community that forms around you is something you’ll never understand until it happens to you. It’s such a special thing.
3. You don’t need to own your own land
I turn down offers to farm other people’s land weekly. Once you get started and show people what their yard can look like, you’ll have more land than you know what to do with, and all for the price of a weekly share of veggies. It’s important to get started with your first piece of land, and then show others what you can do.
4. Being a leader in your local community
Soon, people will be looking to you for help in their community and not just with their gardening. Because urban farming seems so unconventional, (it’s not) people will be in awe at what you’ve been able to accomplish and want your help in creating success for themselves.
5. There are many other opportunities.
Start an urban farm and you will be able to show the world what you believe. People will take notice, and soon you’ll be interviewed on the local news, radio, and blogs. Others entrepreneurs will be interested in creating businesses with you. You’ll have no shortage of other opportunities to take on, if you want them.
