Watch the Soil Universe unfold before Your Eyes
You will learn how to operate a simple microscope to get the best resolution possible of the life in the soil. Learn how to identify soil creatures and distinguish between beneficial and harmful organisms. Participants should either have their own microscopes or work with a partner to use one. The spreadsheet will convert visual results into the concentration of organisms/gram (teaspoons) of soil and into biomass/gram. A laptop is required. You are encouraged to take images using a microscope (or a smart phone if you have steady hands). Practice sessions allow participants to analyze their own samples – from soil, to compost, to extract and teas, to water samples, or food — and learn what biology is present.
