Years ago I read about how public speaking was the pinnacle of effective  communication, so I decided to become a great public speaker. It was at first ugly. It was so ugly that I almost fell off a podium. I held on to my life for dear life in front of a small audience for a luncheon speech that I gave for members of the Rotary Club. It was horrible! But I persevered and I eventually learned to be a world citizen.-class keynote speaker invited and paid to speak to all kinds of audiences internationally.

I learned that the secret of giving a great speech had more to do with how I felt about myself and my audience than any real secrets, even though there are some really simple things that can take an average speech and make it great. What’s more important to you though is that the same things that make a public speech great are what make telling a story to some friends fascinating instead of boring, or having a private intimate conversation with someone more meaningful and authentic than it could ever be without them. 

Although I have taught hundreds of people how to communicate better, the original idea for this program was born recently. 

Recently, I witnessed people you thought were great or great speakers fail to deliver when they got the chance to speak at graduation ceremonies. Instead of inspiring students and parents, they failed to wow them when they took the mic in front of a motivated crowd of parents and students eager for inspiration. 

The worst part is that they didn’t actually say anything. In fact, in one case, the speaker was able to tell a great story and even better told it. So it wasn’t their content that was lacking … it was more fundamental, it was about how they thought about themselves as a speaker and their audience, and what they wanted to accomplish in the short time they had in front of them. As they spoke, you could sense that they were anxious and scared. However, they could have been motivated and inspired with so little effort.

I was able to make the following decision right then and there: “These people could become great speakers if they would only let me help them.” So I decided to do it and I started the design of the program you are currently reading.
