About the authors
Tom Humphries, Associate Director of Teacher Education Program, also teaches in Department of Communication at University of California San Diego. He currently coordinates a program that trains teachers of deaf children in a bilingual manner. Before this, he was an English teacher at Gallaudet University for many years. He also served as the Associate Dean of the San Diego Community College district where he oversaw the development of ASL programs and interpreter training programs. He is a cross-cultural communication and language specialist with a Ph.D. Learning. Carol Padden and Dr. Humphries co-authored Deaf in America: Voices from a Culture, as well as several other books and articles on ASL and the culture and deaf people.

Carol Padden is an Associate Professor at the University of California in San Diego’s Department of Communication. She teaches courses on language, culture, and media. She is a Georgetown University graduate and has a Ph.D. from the University of California at San Diego in Linguistics. Recent research has focused on reading development in young children with hearing loss. She also wrote extensively about the culture and lives of Deaf people in the United States. Her work was recognized with a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship and many other awards and grants. She has also co-authored several books with Tom Humphries. American Sign Language structure.
