What’s Up Athletes!
I am Lee Taft, better known as… “The Speed Guy”. This is my name, because I don’t understand multi.-My directional game speed is better than mine. My foot speed has been a factor in my success, from my college days to now.
What’s My Secret?
- I strive to achieve stiffness and stability. This means that I want my joints and muscles to quickly absorb force from every landing.
- I train at game speed. I don’t like to be slow. “dog it” I just do the job. To improve my agility, I do agility drills.
- I try to do as much reactive training possible. This means I compete against partners, a coach’s signals, Reaction balls… as an example. It’s something I see, react to, and then attack!
- I use non-resisted and resisted.-I was able to resist impulse training. This type of training makes me faster by simulating the forces and angles I must cut with laser.-like speed. I can do a lot of reps in a matter of seconds.
What can you do to win? “Game Like Speed”?
Game Like Speed
This product is available as a standalone or combined with your speed training program.
THE KEY TO THE GAME-SPEED and QUICKNESS ARE TO BE ABLE INSTANTLY PLANT YOUR FOOT, AND REACCELERATE WITHOUT HESITATION IN A DIFFERENT DIRECTION.
The same tools have been my choice for many decades. I have had a lot of success with the Agility Ladder, the Low Box and of course with a 1/2 inch to a ¾ inch Superband.
The Agility Ladder:
- My athletes should be able to respond quickly when I ask them questions. This is done by using a tool that allows athletes to remain stationary or move in a restricted area. As their coach, I can control the movements of the athletes without them escaping.
- The Ladder gives you a boundary and distance to stick to. This provides a safe and secure space for you to test your ideas. “reactive quickness”.
Why the Low Box?
- A ball movement must be changed in the direction of an opponent when an athlete reacts to it. The outside leg must always be the plant leg. The athlete can plant the outside leg with the low box, while still unweighting the inner leg. It works exactly as it does in real life-Time game-speed.
- A low box should be approximately 4 inches high. Anything higher (up to 6 inches at times) will disrupt normal flexion mechanics.
The Superband:
- The miracles happen because of the fantasticand. The superband provides artificial momentum. It is as if your shuffled 5 miles and then had to change directions.
- The superband, ladder and low box allow me to recreate mass and momentum forces in a way that is similar to a lateral cut or plant.
All three of these tools are combined to create the momentum and mass forces. You can dial in the reacceleration emphasis and get the reactive quickness off of the ground.
This strategy allows us to get tons of reps in a small area and in a short amount of time. HOME RUN
The Ladder Aid is a great tool for creating stiffness.
- The ladder is an excellent tool for safely and gradually building stiffness training.
- It allows me keep my athletes in a restricted area, so I can coach them and teach them.
- My athletes know where they stand. They can’t get carried away and put themselves at risk.
- With the help of my targeted cuing and the ladder, I can get the athletes on the right track. “stick” Landings. This method teaches muscles how to manage forces, and helps stabilize the joints.
- This gives athletes the best chance for a productive workout.
What are the Goals of the Global Partnership?
- Use safe and proper force application angles.
- Consider a possible reacceleration in another direction.
- Teach athletes how to “Stay in the Tunnel” (Keep your athletic ability low enough to complete the task).
- Get faster results by reducing training time.
- You can do more repetitions, increase your joint angles and produce more force.
- Flat out improve quickness!
If you are looking for a quick, simple and effective way to improve your athletes’ quickness when you have limited time and space, This is your resource.
Who’s this for?
-
- This approach has worked for me with 7-From year-olds to professional athletes.
-
- Athletes who must move laterally more quickly.
-
- Teams have limited space and time, but they need to be able to react quickly.
-
- Individual athletes like Tennis players who are able to move laterally and live and die by it are called “tennis players”.
-
- Athletes from court and field sport looking to dominate on both sides of the court or field.
- Speed training drills that coaches can add to their existing program are a great option.
- Physical Therapists are looking to help athletes get back into the game.-Speed cutting and changing of direction
Is THIS SAFE?
These speed training drills have been used with many groups. These drills can be used with young athletes, injured athletes returning to sport, overweight athletes, or weak athletes.
It is easy to follow with athletes using the progression I have outlined. This will allow your athletes to feel confident and be able to CUT WITH CONFIDENCE.
DO THE ATHLETES LOVE IT?
This may be my favorite speed training drill, aside from tag and chase games. I love it because it gets my athletes motivated to train. They love it!
There are competitions that they can participate in, and there are standards athletes who can meet them.
This form of training is quick and athletes can get behind it 100%.
If there has ever been a product that coaches, athletes, physical therapists, strength coaches, and fitness trainers must have in their toolbox that can improve your current program…it is Game Like Speed.
