Stephen Whittier Instructor
Many grapplers over 40 have the misperception that taking down the clinch or takedowns is very difficult on the body, and much more dangerous than practicing ground techniques.
But nothing could be further from the truth…. You just need the right approach.
“Not what’s most basic, but what’s most important”…
What is the secret to this method?
Just like I always say when it comes to other areas in Jiu-Jitsu skill development, it’s all about having a deep focus and understanding of the fundamentals. And remember, if you’re familiar with my work you know that I differentiate between fundamentals and “basics”. Fundamentals, to borrow a phrase from Matt Thornton: “not what’s most basic, but what’s most important”!
In other words, fundamentals don’t just refer to “basic techniques”, but to the most important physical principles and concepts that make all grappling work at a high level…
Principles such as connection, base, weight distribution, angle and force lines, etc. When you can develop these, you’ll not only learn any techniques you learn much faster, you’ll also notice that you get WAY better results with far less effort.
Let me briefly share some of my own experiences. ..
Jiu was my first experience with grappling.-Jitsu – no wresting background, no Judo.
Like most people at the beginning, I spent about 90% of my grappling on the ground. The other 10% was standup BJJ.-defense techniques.
But my very first day of doing vale tudo (early MMA) training, two things very quickly became clear….
If you can’t grapple on the feet, you have a BIG hole in your ability to use your Jiu-Jitsu
If you aren’t comfortable grappling on your feet, you’re going to be stiff, inefficient, and use way too much energy (just like when you first started rolling)
I spent a couple of years learning the fundamentals and focusing on: The Clinch!
Why? Why?-Jitsu students who try to get better at standup grappling try to learn the game like a competitive freestyle wrestler with many years’ experience. They are often injured and get smashed on the mat because they lack the physical abilities to perform takedowns and set up wrestling shots from the outside.
With the clinch as your standup grappling base, however, you can learn to control and take down opponents much more effectively – and efficiently!
Over the years, I’ve been able to help many Jiu-For those who want to improve their Jitsu skills, they can be both amateur and professional MMA fighters. And MANY times, my understanding of the deeper mechanical principles I mentioned has allowed me to dramatically improve the technique of even highly experienced wrestlers – often in just one coaching session!
After receiving countless requests over the years, it seemed only right that I make this information available to you. You can also access this information if Jiu.-This is for Jitsu and grappling students who want to learn a strong clinch, takedown and stance skill set.
The Pillars Clinch & Takedowns BJJ Fanatics
This is even more amazing! You don’t have to worry anymore about traditional techniques and techniques that require athleticism (and often years of experience) in order to defeat your opponents. This means that you don’t have to be afraid of building a strong foundation.-This critical aspect of the game requires a high level of performance.
The best part?
You will start to see the results. “The Pillars of Jiu-Jitsu: Clinch & Takedowns” IMMEDIATELY – all for less than most black belts charge for a single private lesson!
If you are a Jiu, then again.-This is the Jitsu for grapplers who want to improve their clinch and takedown skills.
Takedowns, standup grappling and takedown defense are all half of the game. If you don’t know the basics, you are an incomplete grappler.
It doesn’t matter if you spend more time being crushed to the bottom in every practice, because you are always the one being taken down.
That’s what I believe. The Pillars Jiu-Jitsu: Clinch & Takedowns Standup grappling is possible with BJJ starting at 40.
