I was a teenager when I read the 4-Hour Workweek. I was really excited to start building iPhone apps. My goal was to develop a few apps, earn a lot of money, and then retire to Costa Rica.

Then I did something that few people do. I built two apps.

Problem was, nobody bought them. I LOST more than $1,000. I was even more frustrated.

Last year was the year I finally discovered the secret. I discovered what my friends who were successful did to make their projects succeed.

…and that is when everything changed for me.

A few months later, I launched my first Videofruit course. In just 96 hours, it had sold more than $25,000 worth of products.

My name’s Bryan Harris. Videofruit was founded by me.

Over the past 12 months, I’ve grown my email list from 0 to 10,000 subscribers.

But it wasn’t always easy…

The phrase “If I heard it” would be a great idea. “The money is in the list” I might have thrown up one more time.

Every podcast and blog I listened too mentioned this mysterious email system. I was not given any instructions on how to build an email database or make money with it.

I would then read quotes by people with established platforms. People like Jon Acuff and Michael Hyatt, as well as Pat Flynn.

They would say things like…

This blog was my first attempt at blogging. I didn’t include a way to collect email addresses when I started it. No newsletter, no opt-in form – nothing.” – Pat Flynn (75,000 subscribers)

But again, no actionable takeaways for me.

There is no system that I could follow.

No blueprint.

After months and months of frustration, finally I said it. “Screw it!”

My only way to find out was to experiment, and then learn the hard way.

The Videofruit blog was born. To grow my list, I began to study what Gary Vaynerchuk and Ramit Sethi were doing.

I would search for a strategy, then install it, and then measure its results. I did this until I finally found the right few strategies.

These strategies were improved and I was able to help pioneer a new list.-building system that’s now being used by the same people I learned from in the beginning.

Now, only 18 months later, I’ve been able to work with and coach some of the biggest names in online marketing: Michael Hyatt, Jeff Goins, Jon Acuff, Hubspot, KISSmetrics and Noah Kagan (among others).

I also created a coaching program specifically for Videofruit readers, and helped more than 30 clients to refine the system.
Five fatal mistakes to avoid while building your list

Only one thing stands between you and your goal of building your list.

A fatal mistake.

The only mistake you can’t learn and recover from is a fatal one.

Make the first mistake: You base your entire business around podcasts and blog posts

Most “experts” This course will help you build your business through the mapping of a huge 75-Page business plan and then execute each step.

As entrepreneurs, we know that’s a silly way to go about it.

It sounds warm, cuddly and cozy. But’s it’s completely ignorant of the way business actually works.

One of the greatest problems I see is moving to the opposite end of the spectrum.

We take “lean startup” To mean “You don’t need a plan; you can figure out everything as you go.”

This is also absurd.

Blog posts and podcasts can help you get 100% of your business strategy and business acumen. It’s like reading WebMD articles and becoming a doctor.

There’s a better way. There is a better way to learn.

A guide is essential.
Second mistake: Not understanding how to make money off the list

What do you do when you have a list?

You’d be shocked how many time this happens.

One builds a solid list with 5,000 names over months or years. 10,000 subscribers and then….

Nothing.

They don’t know what to do next.

Instead of using the list to determine exactly what their readers want, and then creating and launching a product, they fail.

The truth is you don’t need 100,000 readers to create a sustainable income.

This leads us to error #3.
Make #3: Thinking that you need more subscribers to be successful

You don’t have to have a gigantic email list to make extremely good money online. It was my belief that a $ list would be sufficient to make a lot of money online.10,000 Launching I needed to have 10s of thousand people on my mailing list.

But that’s just not true.

These are just a few. Actual launch numbers from me and a few friends…

Subscribers: 2,500
First Launch Revenue: $30,000

Subscribers: 650
First Launch Revenue: $45,000

Subscribers: 6,500
First Launch Revenue: $25,000

Subscribers: 26
First Launch Revenue: $800

Subscribers: 3,600
First Launch Revenue: $51,000

The results you get will be different. There are many moving parts in the above numbers. But it’s a mistake to think you have to work for 3 years to build an email list before being able to create sustainable and reliable income from it.
Fourth error: Focusing too much on the wrong platforms (like Instagram or Twitter).

Look…

Each platform that is released will have more “popular” Each one is better than the other.

Facebook
Twitter
Instagram
Snapchat

Each has seen a faster growth rate and been featured in more media than the others. You will find more information about them than any other media channel.

But the truth is this…

Nothing even comes close to touching email when it’s time to get your readers to take action.

5th Mistake
