I realized it’s because of the two problems with email marketing…
1. Too much email
I asked my Facebook friends for screenshots that showed how many unread email messages they had. This is an example of a typical inbox.
Every marketer is hitting people’s inboxes. So when you send your message, you have to compete with every freakin’ email in there.
It’s an endless box of stress.
2. People love using messaging apps more than email.
I discovered that messaging apps are a great way to communicate with my team, even when we talk about marketing emails.
People love messaging apps.
They allow you to send messages quickly.
You will find the responses to your questions shorter and more easily read.
And they’re just more fun.
Consider who the last person you ate with, or the person you work the most closely with. You can talk to them via email. Do you prefer to use a messaging app or email?
So I tried an experiment…
Can I use messaging apps to reach my audience if they are the preferred way people communicate? What would they do with the information I send? Would they purchase?
It was so easy to test it. And what I saw blew my mind…
I received 80% open rates and click rates.
Who is this person who gets 80%+ open rate in email?! Pretty much no one, that’s who. Maybe it was just my Mixergy crowd. Maybe they’re just a little bit crazy or advanced or different.
So I started talking to other people who are using messaging apps to communicate with their people, and they’re saying it’s not at all unusual-Although 80% seems high, it is not unusual to see over 50%.
It’s not unheard of.
The engagement rates are so high because marketers haven’t saturated this channel. And because it’s so quick to check Facebook Messenger that people just open it up to see what’s there.
Compare this to the 20% average email open rate and 22% click rates.-MailChimp: 5%
“But Andrew, my email open rates don’t suck THAT bad…”
If your email open and click rates are higher than MailChimp’s average, that doesn’t surprise me at all.
But is that 80%? They are not.
So why aren’t we trying to get a piece of this 80%? Why do we live in email?
Look, I’m not saying email is dead. If it’s working for you, keep doing it. I’m saying that you also need to know about THIS, too, because the open rates and engagement are too good to ignore.
And I’m excited about this for another big reason…
