Masculinity isn’t something people think about often,” said Boyson. “Our goal was to find a cross-Ask a section of people what being means to them.
Casey Neistat – An Emasculating Truth
The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism reports that testosterone levels are declining at an alarming rate of 1 percent per year in American men. But why? That’s what Casey Neistat Oscar Boyson and they sought to reveal in their film An Emasculating Truth.
Ultimately, the short film goes beyond this question to further the current dialogue about today’s definition of masculinity in light of changing gender roles. Boyson, the film’s producer and on camera emcee, came to some very personal conclusions about what it means to be a man today, turning the camera on himself and asking the question ‘what does it mean to be a man?’
“Masculinity isn’t something people think about often,” Boyson. “Our goal was to find a cross-section of people and ask them, what does being a man mean to you? This is an issue where there isn’t much middle ground and we wanted to find out why.”
The facts speak volumes. Layoffs were more common for men than they are for women.-In the past year, offs increased by 80 percent. This means that women now outnumber male workers for the first time ever in history. With nearly 60% of all grad school students being women, higher education is a more male-dominated field.
Boys – the future men – are failing to graduate high school at alarming levels, at 4.9 percent, compared with 3.8 percent for girls. They are also being diagnosed with ADHD at three times the rate of their female counterparts. In short, manhood is in peril … or at least going through a pretty significant transformation on its way to the new future state.
