A period of horrific violence, political intrigue and ambitious aristocrats, the War of the Roses was a series of battles fought between 1455 and 1485. One of the most significant events in English history, it bore witness to a series of monarchs.
This course takes you through the events of the conflict chronologically – highlighting the main battles and incidents that occurred and the key players involved – grouped under ‘the First War’, ‘the Second War’ and ‘the Third War’, to highlight the separation of years and people between each cluster of events.
The course begins with a look at the 100 Years War and how it caused the development of the War of the Roses. We’ll examine the two branches of the House of Plantagenet – the Yorks and the Lancasters, along with the key components and people that led them to war.
From there, the War of the Roses Diploma Course takes you through the war chronologically, beginning with the Battle of St. Albans and the Battle of Blore Heath. You’ll also discover the role Margaret of Anjou, queen consort of Henry VI, played in the War of the Roses.
The ‘Second War’ opens with the Battle of Towton and continues with a reflection on two important battles – the Battle of Barnett and the Battle of Tewkesbury. The ‘Third War’ explores the reigns of the Yorkist kings, Edward IV and his brother Richard III. You’ll also learn of the downfall of Richard III and the start of the Tudor era.
The course concludes with an examination of the political and cultural legacies that resulted from the four decades of war and the lasting impact the House of Tudor had on England.
