Claude C. Hopkins (1866-1932) was a pioneer in advertising. He believed advertising should only be used to sell things and should be measured and justified for the results.
He worked for various advertisers, including Bissell Carpet Sweeper Company, Swift & Company and Dr. Shoop’s patent medicine company. At the age of 41, he was hired by Albert Lasker owner of Lord & Thomas advertising in 1907 at a salary of $185,000 a year, Hopkins Copywriters should have researched the products of their clients to ensure they are able to produce convincing copy.-Why copy? He believed that a product’s best salesperson was its product, and he believed in sampling.
