We typically have a scale laid out so that there are two to three notes per string. These layouts are very effective, but they can also lead to repetitive patterns of movement that can limit your ability to play.
This means that You will get better at playing scale shapes but you will soon become less adept at using your left hand to independently move your fingers. This effect can be countered by practicing chromatics, which will give you an extremely flexible fretting hand.
