Colin Theriot – Simple Stories Sell Stupid
Once upon time, I was an avid comic book fan. I used to raid the drugstore shelves almost every day for my comic fix. My mom even photocopied my comic books at work, so I could share them with my friends.
Comics are not for everyone. Back then, not so. The biggest films ever made today are based upon the same heroes that I mocked for liking. Cool kids get mocked. Jocks mocked. Mocked by the girls.
But I couldn’t resist. I was hooked. Comics were created specifically to satisfy my collector gene. Covers with special features. Polybagged with collectible cards. Multi-title crossovers.

This is not to mention the fact that comics had been in print for almost 100 years by the time I bought the most. Creators were able to fine-tune a form that allowed them to tell short serialized stories that would keep kids (and adults!) coming back month after month to purchase more products.
How? How do you do it? It’s more than just cool characters. Many comics featuring cool characters are canceled. It’s more than the art. Sometimes 12 issues of pretty books with bad stories won’t be enough to last a year.
It should tell a good story. It should be easy to consume. It must be delicious and leave you wanting more. This is where marketers have a twist:
Comic books are a multifaceted medium.-billion dollar industry. Sell piles of paper packed with ads. With markups in the price to make subscriptions profitable by themselves.
Stories They did more than just hook me and my friends, they brought in the Bucks. By the buckets. Month after month.
What survived was the characters that are still in motion 30+ years later, after I gave up on spending my allowance on rag papers and four colors ink.
The characters had captivating stories. Highs. Lows. Conflict. Drama. Triumph. Defeat. Struggle. Success. Failure. Failure. Not only to save the damsel, the day, or even the world, but the most memorable characters lived real lives beneath the cowls and capes, and when they put aside the laser boasters, they had a beating heart.
Wants. Desires. Goals.
Just like you. I can help you achieve at least one of your goals. You want to make money. I do, too. I love to. It’s how my family lives and how I pay my mortgage. What should I sell?
Stories. Like I learned in childhood. Spider-Man taught me, y’all.
Of course, there are others. But I do have a core understanding of serialized stories, which get audiences hooked, waiting, wanting, and engaged – and BUYING-1, which I learned when I was just a single digit in age and was still awake past bedtime. Reading comics.
