Is it? “The Force” With you?
Do you remember ever being forced to laugh at an audience member? Did you ever try to force humor on an audience?
You can tell when it’s forced, can’t you? It’s easy to feel it. Listeners think. “Oh, he really reached for that one.” Oder worse, they groan.
Oh no she didn’t!
One speaker used a line that was so awful it completely destroyed the rest of her speech. Actually, it was the only thing her audience would remember about her. It would not have her invited back. Because it was forced, it failed.
“Don’t speak for standing ovations. Speak for standing invitations.”
Your audience should feel loved and re-invited often. This won’t happen if you force humor on them. This is possible when humor is discovered in a natural, organic, and unforced manner-No cost.
Audience members desire fun and a message that is also entertaining.
“You must have a message and amusement.”
Take a Detour-Free Humor
Some speakers get laughs, but at great expense. Audience members must take a detour. “get” The humor. The speaker must temporarily reschedule his message to make the humor work. The audience ends up losing its sense of humor, but laughs.
Ask me how do I know this? It’s because I was one of those speakers. That’s right, I used the kind of humor that made them laugh but also wonder, “Why the heck did he bring that up?” In that instance, they laughed, but I lost. I lost them because I didn’t know these humor secrets.
Is your humor “on” The way or “in” What’s the best way to get there?
Even though I was only five minutes into one speech, I remember hearing an audience member sarcastically comment on it. “What do you think you are…some kind of comedian?” Ouch! It hurt. It was obvious that the rest of that speech was doomed.
You will learn 33 tools that will help you discover the humor you are looking for in this course. You should be on the right path, not IN it. Send your message. You don’t need to take any detours. It’s a smooth, funny ride that your audience is thrilled to take.
But Why Aren’t They Laughing? This SHOULD be funny
Did you ever wonder why some of your friends aren’t as successful as others? “should-be-funny” Humor isn’t working? Here’s my advice. Don’t quit on it…not yet.
It might just be a minor tweak. Check out the 5 Troubleshooting Tools for fixing your humor so that you actually do get the laughs you expected and even get some you didn’t expect. These tools will help you turn those frustrating moments into productive ones that bring out the best in you. Finally, you’ll even see how to handle yourself if they still don’t laugh.
Is it possible to make your audience laugh?
Having spoken now in dozens of countries, I’ve been fortunate enough to share the stage with hundreds of speakers. I’ve realized something. Many of the speakers I’ve seen can get laughs, but few can keep their audiences laughing throughout the entire speech. Few speakers can transform a speech into an emotional experience for their audience. This course will help you become one of those few.
Bali, Indonesia: Making people laugh
10% Talent, 90% Tools
Humor is 10% talent and 90% tools, according to me.
I’m sure there are lots of people out there who will disagree with me. They’ll say, “You’re either born funny or you’re not.” Ironically, I think that’s the biggest joke of all. That’s just an excuse not to go for it.
It’s not about how you’re born; it’s about how you learn.
My first 10 speeches were devoid of humor. My humor and message have made me a favorite of meeting planners. My audiences are able to laugh and learn simultaneously. My goal is to make them TALL (Think Act, Laugh, Learn). With the 33 tools you pick up in this course, you’ll be able to do the same and do it on-demand whether you’re a seasoned pro or just starting out.

My Pet Peeve
I’ve done an awful lot of studying as a speaker and received wonderful lessons from some of the best. I have a pet peeve about speakers who give lessons, but don’t actually demonstrate them. This is what I mean “in full” is sharing a full program whether it’s a keynote or a workshop that exemplifies what they’ve taught. It’s easy to share the funny pieces, but how do those pieces fit into the overall speech?
Two live programs
That’s why I’ve decided to include two of my complete live speeches. You’ll hear a keynote and a workshop I did in Santa Clara. California. You can see my humor in action and learn how you can, too. These Workshop and Keynote examples will show you how all the humor fits together for your audience and for yourself. You think that’s fair enough?
