According to Christian tradition, lifting hands is part of healing and prayer. Jesus’ hands are shown as blessings in the earliest representations.

Mary raises her hands to the right in the photo. “Orante” position that seeks to bring down the power and influence of heaven on Earth. The Orante, a figure with wide arms and a symbol for the soul, is known as the “Open Arms” orante Peace in paradise, a representation for the soul in the Other World as an orante with arms extended in prayer.

However, Christianity has seen something unanticipated as it spreads. The missionaries came across cultures using the same symbols to represent their ancient gods. As you can see, many of the Nordic gods were photographed with the same hand positions as the image to the left.

It was decided that Christian missionaries would restrict hand movements in art to avoid any association with other gods.
