Expressive Gestures
Alternatives to Realism Gestures Many messages are carried, often unintentionally. In performance, one can say, expressive gestures reflect the person’s inner emotional or mental state. These gestures are not descriptive, non-illustrative or narrative but they are far from abstract. Expressions can be dramatic, interesting, moving, and meaningful. They are powerful communicators between the performer, the audience, and themselves.
This communication can be easily slipped onto a subconscious-level: instead “word processing”, the “meaning of the non-verbal message bypasses the mind and the spectator absorbs directly what she/he sees. The performer’s gestures will trigger long-lost memories and emotions, as well as associations. It is possible that a non-linguistic truth, otherwise hidden and unexpressed, might emerge from the unconscious.
The focus of the film lies on GESTURES, and their resulting effects. “imaginative” Application in non-realistic performance. Kriszta Doczy is a theatre practitioner and lecturer who has been involved with physical performance for decades across many continents. The video is focused on gestures, with a special emphasis on imagination. This film is part of a larger series that explores the physical aspects of performance. “Imagination is what makes the difference; between ordinary and extraordinary and between average and fascinating..”KD
