Jivey – Master Mentor Sentences K-2
These are the most common complaints that I hear from teachers, as a mentor and professional development leader.
“Teaching grammar is boring. The students hate it and, honestly, so do I.”
“My students don’t make the reading-writing connection.”
“My students make little progress in style and conventions over the course of the year.”
“I’m tired of the basal, but I don’t know what else to do to cover the standards.”
It is possible that you found this page because you are a part of some or all these sentiments. Like me, you are ready to make changes. I thought, I already use children’s books to teach my little ones.-Lessons in reading and writing You can use these books to learn grammar.
I thought it was logical that students should learn from incredible, well-informed teachers.-Written sentences… Giving them a sentence stuffed with errors and telling them to “fix it” They didn’t know what the intended look was!
My students loved the mentor sentence routine. I found it was a fun way to teach grammar.-Spiraling, discussion-My lessons were full, but my students also had fun. They treated this time as a scavenger hunting, a game or a challenge. The best part was that my students learned more grammar and improved their writing. My students were actually trying to copy the mentor sentences in their writing. It’s the teacher’s ideal, right?!
This course is designed for teachers who are looking to move beyond boring teaching methods and see an actual transfer to reading and writing. What’s included?
It is possible for students to love writing and grammar!
Don’t take my word for what I say…
Use a mentor text students love to help them get invested in the sentence that they are analysing. A routine that students are familiar with daily will help them feel at ease when completing their assignments.

It is truly different because mentor sentence lessons are driven by discussion about the student’s perceptions and creations. One lesson may have one sentence, but it will not be the same in another classroom.
You will be able to see a significant improvement in ALL students’ writing and learning abilities!
