Jon Frederickson – Overcoming Resistance
Ever feel like you’re working too hard with a client and getting nowhere? You don’t need to let your client’s defenses block progress.
For the first time ever, we’re making part two of our psychotherapy skill-building audio studies public. Access to audio studies was once limited to multichannel.-This audio course will help you identify and resolve subtle resistances that patients may have. These studies will teach you how to share your feelings with patients.
How it works
This is a good practice.-You are the therapist and I ask you scripted questions. ‘patient’Respond with defenses. You will intervene. You will then get a recommendation answer. I’ll also offer supervision and teaching along the way to reinforce the intervention technique.
As we explore numerous examples of each defense, you’ll have ample practice time to learn how to recognize defenses immediately and intervene effectively. You’ll rapidly improve your assessment and intervention skills and learn to handle problems easily that would have stumped you in the past.
Defense Work You’ll Learn to Do
Protection against Feelings: When the patient resists feeling
Protections against the giving of a particular example
Differentiating between feeling and stimulus
By inviting emotions, you can block your defenses
By inviting feelings and labelling defenses, you can block defenses
Protections against feelings: ambiguity, diversification and hypothetical speech. Cover words, rationalization, and cover words.
Keep your eyes on the present relationship and distinguish between emotions and defenses.
There are defenses against grief
Work with Resistance: When the patient resists emotional closeness with the therapist
Resistance is the most common problem that therapists face with patients who are resistant to therapy. They fail to recognize when the patient moves from resisting emotions to resisting closeness with the therapist. These are some of the most important studies that have ever been done to help you develop these special skills. Without these skills, it is impossible to successfully treat patients who are highly resistant.
How to identify the resistance and achieve emotional closeness
Identify the resistance to emotional intimacy and openness.
An endurance study to identify the barriers to emotional closeness and invite feelings
Clarification and challenge to the resistance
Clarifying the function of defense and mobilizing the patient’s will to the task
Clarifying the price for defense
The therapist should be able to recognize the resistance to emotional intimacy and invite feelings towards them.
Maintaining a focus is key to emotional closeness and avoiding resistance
Projection of the Superego
This comprehensive multi-volume set is only part 2.-part skill-When building an audio course, it is a good idea to do the first set first. This set of audio studies is more complicated and builds upon the previous set. The first set of studies will help you learn faster and be more efficient.

Jon Frederickson has created a superb set of audio training programmes… These recordings have added a dimension to my skill building that I have not been able to achieve through my other learning methods. I believe the key to success is in the quick introduction of the skills, and the repetition exercises. Jon The listener is guided in an interactive manner through various therapeutic scenarios. Each module is explained clearly and focuses on one skill. There are many examples of each technique. Jon Then he walks you through several practice runs that will help you to think through the skill and then internalise it. He helps you build your confidence and manage complexity so that it is not overwhelming. The effects were evident in my clinical practice as soon as I saw them. Jon’s clear instructions are sound bite long and easy to remember, and because of the practice runs with the tapes, I found myself able to immediately incorporate the skills within my established practice. Importantly, the recordings highlight the core ISTDP skills so succinctly that it has given me a renewed appreciation of how important it is not to rush the basics (such as clarifying the problem and the client’s will/motivation). Anyone who is interested in the ISTDP method would benefit from these recordings. We are grateful for this. Jon. These skills-Your clear and concise introduction to the therapeutic skill set, building guides, has been a great help in my learning of the ISTDP method. I look forward to the next releases. The Skill-ISTDP practitioners from all levels can build audio courses. This is a powerful learning tool. The exercises are well-structured, the learning objectives and how to reach them are clear. Jon Frederickson She is an inspirational teacher, as usual. The skill is highly recommended.-Audio course construction
Thank you again. Jon!

I would like to say thank you Jon Frederickson Thank you for making this audio course accessible. Although I have been studying ISTDP literature for three decades and being part of a core group study group, the audio course proved to be a valuable learning opportunity. It taught me how to manage defenses that patients are often (and unconsciously) creating. Jon Acts as the patient in role-Plays and then waits for the response from the listener. Then Jon Gives a response that is likely to be effective. I was able to master ISTDP through repetition and drilling.

I’m so glad that I purchased these skill building audio recordings. For several years I have been seeking guidance as to how to work around patients’ defenses to help them tap into their emotions. The techniques I sought were not addressed by the psychologists I have met and the books I have read. Jon These recordings contain addresses. Although they are fundamental concepts, they were not something I knew. For example, you ask a patient how her father’s behavior made her feel and she responds “It made me feel disappointed.” That’s actually not a feeling, that’s what happened to her, her father disappointed her. So you can’t just take that as the answer to how that made her feel. You’ve got to dig deeper and he teaches you how.
I like the fact that they are available in audio format so you can download them to your iPod. I listened to three hours of them the other day while I was painting my house. It made it go by much faster and helped me learn a lot. They are something I will be able to listen to over and over to cement the ideas. I look forward to the next set of recordings.
