Although I have been practicing yoga for many years, it was something I fell in love with so I started teaching it. However, my physical abilities were still not up to par. Splits were a distant dream, and my backbends were not comfortable.
Let me just say that yoga gave me a lot of strength, mental clarity, calm and peace.
But that is not what yoga is all about. But I wanted more for my physical health. Especially flexibility & ease when doing certain moves.
Unfortunately, my yoga practice was not working for me and I started to experience other problems.
My hamstrings kept getting injured.
These injuries kept me from practicing. Only later did I realize that this was due to my incorrect practice. Instead than strengthening the muscles, I focused only on passive flexibility. This is something that yoga practitioners often overlook.
Many yoga positions encourage passive flexibility, which can lead to a loss of control over your body during deep stretches. This can cause injuries and may not be very useful.
It was then that it clicked for me.
I was using yoga to help me reach my physical goals. For so long, I believed that I should just “stick to the practice” eventually, I’ll see the results even though it took months for nothing to change.
After I became frustrated with the lackluster progress I had made, things changed for me. I started looking for ways to get the flexibility that I desired.
And that’s when I discovered the magic of mobility, active & dynamic stretching and loaded stretching. My coaches were the best! These techniques worked and we were given a detailed plan to follow.I was able to get my splits in three months.).

This was the way that the program was formed.
Let’s get back to the story. My yoga classes were not for the spiritual practice of yoga, but the physical benefits.
Since I realized there were better ways to increase the range and motion of my students, I began teaching this method via focused workshops. “deep dive” classes.
The end of this story isn’t that surprising – nowadays I’m a Yoga & Movement teacher and on a journey to share what I’ve learnt and help people level up their own movement practice.

To increase range of motion safely, you need to strike the right balance between strength and flexibility in a focused approach that takes the most time.
Most people think stretching means you simply stretch the tissue, or the muscle, and that’s all. This is not true. It is possible that your tolerance is increasing and the nervous systems is actually allowing you to perform the positions.
It’s as simple as that: When you move beyond your range of motion, you either feel pain or stiffen your muscles. Both of these are protective mechanisms in your nervous system.
Your central nervous systems (CNS) prioritizes keeping you alive at any cost. Although you might like to run a marathon, climb mountains, or do splits, your CNS does not care about this. It wants to protect your health from any physical dangers. CNS’s beliefs regarding what is a threat to survival are based upon millions of years worth of evolution. Predators were a danger. Injuries such as a pulled muscle could cause death. The most obvious protection mechanisms are the startle reflex and pain, but also weakness or stiffness.
Stretching is about teaching your brain to be safe and not about stretching the actual muscle.
It was a simple way to achieve my goals that I had been working towards for many years.
Your body won’t let you go anywhere it doesn’t feel safe. And that’s where active stretching and mobility comes to play, because it uses not only your flexibility but the strength of the muscle, as well. By increasing your strength in the final ranges of motion, you can create a sense of safety and support.
