About Krishna Das
Traditional kirtan is layered with contemporary melodies and instrumentation. Krishna Das has been called yoga’s “rock star.” The voice of a soulful singer that touches every chord, even those most casual to listeners, is a remarkable one Krishna Das — known to friends, family, And fans as simply KD — has taken call-and-He became an international icon for Western chant and was the best-selling Western chant artist. His album Live Ananda (released January 2012), was nominated to a Grammy in Best New Age album category.
KD spent the late ’60s traveling across the country as a student of Ram Dass. In August 1970, he finally made the journey to India, which led him to Ram Dass’ own beloved guru, Neem Karoli Baba, known to devotees as Maharaj-ji. Given the name Krishna DasKD began to chant when he was following the path Bhakti yoga, or the yoga of devotion.
He found solace in music and found peace and strength both in his Bhakti Yoga practice and in such heroes like Ray Charles, Van Morrison and Steely Dan (whom he jokingly calls Bruce Springsteen). “the Bodhisattva of New Jersey”). KD also co-Triloka Records, a California-based record label, was founded.-A label that focuses on world music and releases such artists as Jai Uttal and Ali Akbar Khan, the sarod virtuoso, and Jackie McLean, the legendary jazz musician/composer.
KD began to lead chanting in Jivamukti Yoga Center (NYC) in 1994.-An ever-growing number of yoga students has allowed him to chant with people around the globe. February 2013 Krishna Das The Grammy Awards in Los Angeles were broadcast online to millions of viewers. The award-A winning film One track HeartThe Story of Krishna DasThe movie “The Godfather” has been seen in over 100 U.S. towns and more than 10 foreign countries. It is now available on DVD worldwide.
KD’s 16th album, Peace of My HeartThe Kirtan Wallah Foundation released ‘, in October 2018, with nearly two hours worth of deeply moving, meditative and artfully restrained recordings. It was a response to a request by a yoga teacher who works closely with children on the autism spectrum. You can forgo the exhilarating tempo changes that are so typical to temple music.-These five tracks are a new style of kirtan. They move slowly and carefully. The song-To-Song stability is strikingly soothing and emotional, and it’s as impactful as ever.
