I was able to make connections with people for years and have made it through the sales world.
But in the end, that just wasn’t good enough.
Sales can be a difficult industry unless you’re part of the super.-Elite salespeople are able to write their own checks.
I only wrote checks to pay bills. Most of the time, they bounced.
I was an average salesperson-person at best.
The only time my earnings were decent was when I worked between 75 and 80 hours per week, which is almost like having two jobs.
To make a long story short, my girlfriend was living in a 2-room basement apartment with mice all over and a baby in the midst of it.
I had to leave the bathroom to dry my hair after taking a shower because it was so small.
My bank account was at minus $102 due to the overdrafts. I was also eating tuna out the can every single day.
We used cash advances from credit card to pay rent at one time.
As you can see I was not only broke but also deep in debt.
I knew I had to make a quick change or I would continue sinking.
How I stumbled upon these Master Level Compliance Techniques
I began looking for as many self-help resources as possible.-I had as many resources for improvement as I could find, as well as books on sales to further my craft.
Every day, I gave up sleep to get the information I needed.
One day a friend of mine gave some hypnosis cd’s that were designed to help me become a better communicator.
It was actually a lot of crap, so I set them aside for a while.
I thought hypnosis was pure BS.
On stage, people are put in a trance and can cluck like chickens.
Come on…gimme a break.
So I kept on trucking….
Reading sales book after sales book.
Learning technique after technique.
But, it was an ongoing problem.
I was always disappointed when a sales tactic I tried on someone would backfire, causing them to become annoyed and leave.
It felt strange.-natural.
Instead, I’d rather go back to my default style of being a nice guy and maintaining a conversational tone.
And while that worked better than trying to use hardcore sales techniques it still wasn’t good enough because people were walking out the door without buying anything.
It was something I didn’t know. Magic element that combines the technique with the conversational tone.
NLP came up as I was researching communication strategies and began reading about them.
It was then that I discovered Dr. Richard Bandler (the inventors of NLP), had created the world.-Reputation Milton Model Communication based on the time they observed it “almost magical” Dr. Milton Erickson, a hypnotist, has the communication skills to communicate his ideas.
Erickson is the “The” Erickson. “father of modern hypnotherapy” He was, undoubtedly, the most persuasive man in human history.
Funny thing is he wasn’t born a “master of persuasion”.
After falling very ill, he developed the skill of persuasion.
He contracted Polio at 17 years old.
He was paralysed to the point that he couldn’t speak and was nearly completely crippled.
He lay down in bed for several months, and his mind began working overtime.
He recognized the importance of nonverbal communication between his family and his doctors.
He studied body language, the tone of each person’s voice, and the contrast between verbal and nonverbal expression.
He also started to see the world differently. “body memories” He used to move his muscles when he was able to walk.
He concentrated on these memories and slowly recovered the use of his upper body, so that he could speak again and use his arms.
He made himself a superhuman.-Human goal.
To strengthen his leg and arm muscles, he planned to take a canoe trip of 1,000 miles.
His adventure was challenging and exciting. He was able to walk again after returning from his trip with the help of a cane.
He was a self-employed.-He uses hypnosis to help him manage the pain and mobility issues in his life.-A threatening bout of polio.
His 50-year-long career was dedicated to researching the link between suggestion and Hypnosis.
Erickson was a pioneering thinker. His theories were radically different to the hypnotic techniques used at the time by psychoanalysts.
This is unlike a session in which the subject lies down on a couch and remains passive while the hypnotist puts him or her into hypnosis, then offers suggestions.
Ericksonian sessions would have stressed the interaction and conversation between subject and patient.
He used his conversational hypnosis patterns to help his patients tap into their unconscious minds and find the tools that would allow them to make changes.
This is the real secret to mastering influence.
When you can help the subject, client, customer, friend, family member or whoever else find the resources and power within themselves to take the actions they need to take to improve their lives…
You can be the hero.
First, convince them. You can take action or think and differently.
The problem is that people are naturally wired to resist change, influence, or persuasion.
This is true even if what you’re trying to persuade them to do will benefit them immensely.
You see every time your subject suspects that you’re trying to “sell” them on something it’s like a siren goes off in their mind.
Sometimes it’s conscious and sometimes subconsciously, but it happens.
This is a natural defense mechanism which dates back to primitive time when as a species we had to continuously protect our resources.
You can think this way when you are trying to influence, persuade or sell your subject.
“What are they really after?”
“What’s their motive?”
“What’s in it for them?”
“How much (time or money) is this gonna cost me?
This is what we refer to as RESISTANCE.
It’s a dirty word.
I wish it didn’t exist.
But the fact is that it does and it’s not going anywhere.
And it’s exactly what I was dealing with when trying to become a “good salesman”.
I was hurt by the very techniques that were meant to help me.
All of it has to do something called Direct influence
Every time you attempt to You can directly influence someone They will resist you more.
What I Learned About The “Father of Modern Hypnotherapy”
Erickson knew all about that nasty word resistance.
He also knew that people are naturally resistant to design.
He also understood that people could not be hypnotized without them Their resistance was decreased.
His main goal was to lower the resistance of his subjects before hypnotizing them.
Erickson’s approach is more accommodating than direct.
Here’s an example of what a classical Hypnotist might say. “you are going into a trance”Erickson would have something to say about it. “you can comfortably learn how to go into a trance”.
This allowed the subject to feel at ease with the suggestions, while also allowing them to see the benefits.
The subject is aware they aren’t being hustled and takes full ownership and participates in their transformation.
And just like that…mission accomplished!
Erickson reduced the resistance, got the client to comply and as result became the client’s hero.
This intrigued me.
I started reading everything I could find that was Milton Erickson-related.
When I looked at his communication strategies, it became clear that my thoughts about trance were completely erroneous.
Trance can be described as a higher state of awareness.
And all people (including me and you) are Every single day you enter trance state.
Erickson used indirect influence to his advantage.
He would use something called “distraction” to distract his conscious mind. “artfully vague” He used language to influence clients and had zero resistance.
The Truth About Hypnotic Trances: How they Work
Take a moment to imagine this.
A mother wakes up to her baby crying.
She grabs the baby, changes his diaper, and then she feeds him.
She is actually very busy, and she does everything.
While multitasking, her conscious mind is constantly working on many things.
Then, finally, it’s the end of the day and she sits in a chair to have a cup of tea, now that the baby is asleep.
Her mind drifts to an old memory.
It’s her father and her gathering eggs together on her grandparent’s farm when she was a child.
Her mind is sharp and clear.
At that moment, she’s in a trancelike state as she focuses on the sights and sounds and feelings of that particular day and hour.
For a brief moment, she is not distracted by the events and noises around her.
Instead, she’s gone deep into her mind to Access this hidden memory.
She’s entered a trance.
Take a look at your daily life.
You may find your attention drifting from one task to another. However, there are times when your attention can be focused on one thing at a time. Concentration and attention are extremely important.
Perhaps you’re watching a riveting movie or you’re doing something you love and you look up to see that the clock has advanced a few hours without you even realizing it.
A state of trance is when you become so focused that all other stimuli seem dimmed, this is called hyperfocus.
All forms of trance include anxiety, depression and fear, as well as love and relationships.
If you are afraid or concerned about spiders and spot one on the wall of your home, you will pay close attention to it.
You might be totally paralyzed or unable to move.
Hypnosis can be described as one type of trance.
It can be inducible by a Hypnotist, or it can be self-induced.-induced.
When I realized that having just one of these techniques was an unfair advantage, it was then that I knew what to do.
That’s when I decided to give those hypnosis recordings a chance and eventually I started seeing the benefits of listening to them.
I was feeling more confident.
I was able get more resources for myself, and I eventually became the second most successful salesman behind one man, whom we’ll call Steve.
Funny thing is, I was much more of an a. “people person” He was more than he was.
He was pushy and would resort back to his old ways. “hard closing” When he was needed, people.
He seemed to beat me each month.
One day, my boss sat me to his left and said: “Paul, you know you’re a better sales person than he is right?”
“Yeah I guess so” I replied “but he always seems to beat me”.
“He beats you because he makes more presentations than you do” He said.
Sales is, in a sense, a numbers game.
Your chances of selling are higher if you speak to more people.
More appointments equals more sales
My biggest problem was not setting enough appointments.
Because of that, I was unable to make as many presentations as he was.
I was quickly able to see that he was using something from Erickson’s repertoire called The Double Bind Pattern.
In the simplest definition of bind, it means to impose a certain type of responsibility on someone.
A bind is an action that a statement triggers. This is called a simple pattern or source.–effect.
Binds create the illusion of choice by using words that suggest an option or a selection, but the receiver can still choose the option they want.
Double Bind patterns offer listeners two choices: choice A or B.
The meaning of choice A in this structure is the same as that of choice B, but it’s phrased differently.
Here’s an example: “Would you like us to set an appointment now or should we just mark a specific time when we can meet?”
Choice A is “set an appointment now” And choice B is “mark a specific time when we can meet.”
Both expressions mean the exact same thing but are phrased in a different way.
Your listener has two options: an appointment now, or one scheduled probably tomorrow. It isn’t a huge difference.
This pattern allowed me to double the number of appointments I booked. I also beat Steve to become the top-selling salesperson.
Then I discovered the power of the Metaphor and how you can use it to open someone’s mind to a new point of view.
Then, tag questions
The Universal Quantifier then…
Naturally, I was curious to find out how I could use these patterns in my daily life and not only for selling.
I also found a lot.
The problem was that since I wasn’t planning on using these techniques in a therapeutic setting like Erickson did… I needed to figure out how to organize them in such a way that they could be used in the situations that I needed them for like..
- Sales presentations…
- Public speeches…
- Social events.
- Business meetings…
- Dates…
- Or in everyday conversations…
When I started my mission, I identified six key areas of communication in which we all find ourselves when trying to persuade others.

Once I figured this out I begin categorizing all of Erickson’s Hypnotic Language You should follow these patterns.
I created a framework that I could use to apply Erickson’s techniques to everyday life.
