ABSOLUTE PITCH & RELATIVE PITCH

There are still universities that teach absolute pitch to their students. It’s either innate or acquired. Personallly, I believe this is false. I have this skill since my teens.

What exactly is absolute pitch (also called perfect pitch)? It is the ability of hearing a musical note, chord or melody and to name it.

I believe universities will soon realize this is a skill that can easily be taught. It will be difficult to understand until then. They simply ignore it and dismiss it for being a genetic problem. They just dismiss it as a genetic defect. “People criticize what they don’t understand”Absolute pitch is exempted from the above restrictions.

This absurdity is so funny to me. You should also know, since you are reading this, that absolute pitch can be learned.

This brings me back to relative pitch. What is relative pitch? It is simply the ability to perceive and hear the relationship between notes. Also known as a musical interval. A perfect 5th, for example, is an interval.

Here’s the funny part: relative pitch is often taught in universities. They did get it right at least!

THE ABSOLUTE PITCH GENE

Recently, I read about a scientific study that tried to determine why certain people have absolute pitch and others don’t. What do you think they concluded? They think there might be an absolute pitch gene. I can remember laughing at this… What a bunch of BS. This is like saying that you have a particular singing gene or that you only have a certain guitar gene. That explains why some people can sing, and not others.

When I was born, I didn’t know the sound of C. Music was something that I didn’t know. No newborn baby does either. It’s a learned skill just like language. This skill was learned by me at the age of 16; it is a strong evidence that there is no particular gene.

Absolute pitch can also be taught to anyone, no matter their age or genetics. This method has been taught to musicians as young as 50 and 60. It’s a skill that can be learned like any other. It is not possible to be a natural at it, but you can learn from other students.

MY JOURNEY to ABSOLUTE and RELATIVE PITCH MAGSTERY

At 16 years old, I began my journey to master absolute pitch and relative pitches. I was learning guitar at the time, and really wanted to improve my musical skills. I asked my music teacher about absolute pitch. She told me that you cannot learn it if you don’t have it. I recall my determination and thinking, “I’ll prove her that absolute pitch is possible.”

The next few weeks were filled with thinking about how to teach this skill. Finally, one night it hit me. I created a method over the next week that I used for six weeks. I was so shocked that she flipped out when I asked her to test me. It was pure envy that I can still see in her eyes. Funny because she looked at me funny when I told her that I was learning absolute pitch.

Since then, I have kept my skills up and I still test myself every once in a while. I always score 100%! It’s as simple as spelling my name.
