In the online business space, you’re being shown all these seemingly shining examples and there are all these big, clear targets lined up along the horizon. But they’re a mirage. These targets are paradoxically elusive. from Your real goals.
Shane Melaugh – Audience from Scratch
It’s possible. Serial entrepreneur Shane Melaugh Finally, it reveals the complete process of how to do it.
- There is no need to spend a lot of money on ad space
- There is no need to post endlessly on social media
- There are no tricks, loopholes, or passing fads which suddenly stop working and leave people high and dry.
Reality for 90%+ of online entrepreneurs is very different from It’s the ultimate dream. It’s very different.
When we start building an online business, we dream of how great it will be to have a business that works while we’re sleeping, to be free from a strict work schedule and tyrannical bosses… to be able to work from Perhaps you prefer to sit in cozy coffee shops or on the beach.
Even more important: To be free.
To be in control of our work, our time, and our schedules. To do meaningful, self-directed work.-We enjoy working in a direction we love. To add real value to the world.
It’s a beautiful scenario we paint in our minds, isn’t it?
We don’t dream of staring at a screen all day, every day.
We don’t dream of work that never ends, that creeps into every corner of our lives…
We don’t dream of an endless grind of learning new things, trying new things, putting ourselves out there and being disappointed, over and over again.
But that’s the reality most entrepreneurs face. We didn’t sign up for this, but this is what we got.
Ask the younger version of you. from a few years ago, they’d expect that you should be successful by now. That was the plan, wasn’t it? By now, you should have an online business that is thriving. You should have a website that gets lots of traffic, a growing list of email subscribers, followers, fans…
Yet, somehow, “figuring things out” It seems like each phase takes forever.
Despite your hard work, why are you stuck?
Why is it so frustrating that many online marketers find themselves stuck in a cycle where hard work results in disappointing results? This is why it is so common for people trying to build an online business.
It’s because most entrepreneurs spend most of their energy chasing the wrong goals.
In the online business space, you’re being shown all these seemingly shining examples and there are all these big, clear targets lined up along the horizon. But they’re a mirage. These targets are paradoxically elusive. from Your real goals.
Let me be as clear as possible: most of the things that you care about for your business, most of the goals you’re pursuing… are actually keeping you stuck.
Skeptical?
Keep reading and you’ll see that this isn’t just my opinion. This is the truth.
You’ve been sold an illusion of success… quick wins, easy money, viral content…
Let me ask you: What does success in online business look like?
In your mind’s eye, do you see any of the following:
-
Are you a social media influencer with a large following and lucrative sponsorship deals
-
Websites with millions of users per month and steeply rising lines in their analytics dashboards
-
A viral marketing campaign that reaches millions of people using a single video, or content piece?
-
Startups that grow-Hack your way to a large user base, and then get bought by a tech company (for $$$ Millions).
These are just a few of the many other things you can do. “shining examples” This has led to millions of entrepreneurs going astray. Failure and frustration are common outcomes of trying to imitate these success stories.
Vanity Metrics: How Big Corporations Get You to Work for them… for Free.
There’s a term for metrics that don’t matter, beyond stroking your ego: vanity metrics.
Get your instant download Shane Melaugh – Audience from Scratch
A vanity metric is data that only serves to boost your ego but does not actually help your business grow.
These metrics can be easily measured. These metrics are easily measured on social media platforms like YouTube, Twitter and Facebook. They will slap vanity metrics on you if you are a creator on these platforms.
Vanity Metrics Included:
The number of shares, likes, and upvotes that a post on social media receives.
A video’s number of views and traffic is a measure of how popular a post is. It also determines the frequency with which a post on social media is viewed.
An account’s number of subscribers or followers.
These numbers can be compared to targets that have been set for you. They’re the targets most online entrepreneurs frantically scramble towards.
They promise salvation. You can work hard and get enough followers to make lots of cash!
To be clear: I’m calling these numbers vanity metrics because they don’t matter.
That’s hard to believe, I know. It’s easy to prove it.
A website that receives a lot of traffic can make virtually no money.
You can have millions upon millions of followers but have a totally failed product launch.
Here’s a funny/tragic example of this problem.
You can be an author “success story” Online, but it is not for everyone from burnout & struggle to make ends meet.
At the end of the day, likes, followers, even traffic won’t pay the bills.
This makes perfect sense if you stop and think about it. This is where vanity metrics are located. from? They are prominently displayed in social platforms. They’re used by these platforms as a “carrot” to get users/creators to do what’s good for the platform.
The goal of a social media platform is not to help you, the creator/entrepreneur. Their goal is to make some money. If they have a lot of people who are desperate to create loads of content in hopes of making some money, it is a good thing.-off reward, that’s great for them! No cost for labor!
The reason so many online entrepreneurs fail is not because something’s wrong. It’s because the system works! The system does what it’s supposed to do. The system is all around us, even the creators who are struggling.
Email Marketing: The Holy Grail (?)
While we’re in the process of slaughtering sacred cows, let’s talk about email marketing. Building an email database is the best way to stay in touch with your customers.-Isn’t vanity a good thing? The list is the money! That one has been repeated many times.
And yes, I’ve preached the importance of building a mailing list as well.
BUT…
You can have a mailing list full of people who don’t open your emails and don’t want to buy anything from you.
There’s nothing wrong with building a mailing list (I recommend it!) but if you’re just chasing that subscriber number, if you’re just trying to get that number to increase, you’re still stuck on the vanity metrics treadmill.
So, what’s the solution? What’s the alternative to the futile pursuit of vanity metrics?
There’s a way to solve all of the above problems. There is a way out of this – there’s a better method.
In fact, I’ve been following a set of strategies that are way off the beaten track from For years, online marketing advice has been the norm. And I’ve been very successful in doing so.
I can see the struggle of the entrepreneurs as they try to make it work.-The road to frustration is a well-worn one. It’s clear as day to me why they’re struggling. It’s clear that doing more of the same isn’t going to get them the results they want.
But there’s a problem: the way I’ve done things is so different, it’s hard for some people to believe. I’m able to show you how I do things differently (and I will, just keep reading). Is it possible to see the difference? Or will you turn your back on the shiny mirages and continue your quest for vanity metrics?
You can make the choice.
Okay, enough of the blaming. All these problems can be solved by building an audience.
Ummmm… what?
Isn’t this what we are trying to do?
“Build an audience” means: get more Twitter/Snapchat/TikTok/whatever followers, right?
You will eventually make some money if you can get those numbers up. Strive to increase traffic. from Add more keywords to my blog posts. That’s what we’re already doing!
Yes. But that’s not what I call “audience building”.
Your “audience” It is not your followers and subscribers. It’s not your traffic. Building an audience takes place on a different level. from Building a following and generating traffic.
Definition of “Audience”
Your audience is the people who care about you and your brand. They’re the people who don’t just stumble across one of your posts from A random search or post on social media, and then you are gone forever. They’re the people who actively seek you out want to learn more from you.
Here’s a simple test to illustrate the (massive) difference between vanity numbers and an audience. Consider all the online content that you’ve seen in the past 10 days. If you need a more detailed look, check your browser history.
In all likelihood, you’ve visited hundreds of different pages over the last 10 days. You’ve visited dozens of different websites and scrolled past posts made by hundreds of different creators, companies and brands on different social media platforms.
You were responsible for each of these. “traffic”. You were listed in their vanity metrics.
How many can you remember? What number of websites can you name and remember their URL? Can you think of many YouTube and social media creators? Which of these creators do you want to return to to learn more? from?
My guess is that it’s nowhere near hundreds. Maybe not even dozens.
This means that you consume content from hundreds of creators and brands. However, you only remember and return to a few of them.
This is what makes the difference between traffic or audience.
Small scale, big results: Why all this matters
What is important about defining what is? “audience” is, anyway?
Here’s why: what keeps most online entrepreneurs stuck is that they don’t realize how much success is possible at a small scale. They’re chasing big numbers because they don’t know there’s a better way.
My own journey through business is proof of this. If you looked at the vanity metrics for my brands, you’d guess that I’m a broke wantrepreneur. Here’s a sampling (numbers as of my writing):
ActiveGrowth is a brand of mine. Here’s the sad picture the vanity metrics paint:
Twitter has just 2,169 followers
2,169 followers
Only 8K people subscribe to the YouTube channel
8k subscribers
The page has been deleted from Facebook: 2,000 fans
Followers: 2,000
Even traffic numbers for the website don’t look very impressive, with fewer than 10,000/month.
> 10,000 visitors/Mo
For a brand that has operated for many years, surely this doesn’t look like a success story… or does it?
- Did you know that I created a small productivity course in 2019 under the ActiveGrowth name and it was a success? More than $40,000 in sales Before the course was even made available?
- Did you know that there are blog posts on the ActiveGrowth website that make several hundred dollars per month… each?
- Did you know that this level of intelligence is available? It was a great success It was possible What if you have a very small audience?
Even Thrive Themes (my primary business) doesn’t look all that impressive, when we look at the vanity metrics. Thrive Themes boasts:
There are less than 2,000 Instagram fans
>2K followers
Only 3,500 Twitter followers
3.5K Followers
YouTube boasts around 23,000 subscribers – decent, but not as impressive as YT’s success story.
Yet, Thrive themes is a 7-Figure business…
These are Not Strange exceptions and outlier results are my specialty – I love building businesses like these.
There are many other stories about how I built such businesses in my history.
Before social media existed, I transformed small audiences into thriving companies. I was a co-author-I started a SaaS company without any social media presence. Made more than $1M annually in recurring revenue just from webinars…

It’s simple: I was very young in my career and received the valuable advice not to be concerned about vanity metrics. I took this advice to heart.
Then social media emerged and the online world of business has fallen into vanity-Metric-obsessed madness around me, as I’ve been calmly working away at my small-But-Businesses that succeed.
Meet the Man who had it right all along
Maybe you’re wondering: who gave me this sage advice about vanity metrics and set me on a path to unconventional success, all those years ago?
It was a person who had an exceptional track record in accurately forecasting future developments in tech or culture.
Someone who is, in fact, a wise old guide.
And it’s someone whom I’ve never met personally.
The man who got it right the first time is Kevin Kelly, the futurist best-Selling author. He wrote the most important essay to help you become a self-employed author over a decade ago.-made entrepreneur under the new paradigm of the Internet… and it has since been ignored by almost everyone.
Kevin Kelly proposed the idea of 1,000 true followers. The idea is simple: if you have 1,000 true fans, that’s enough for a thriving business.
1000 True Stories You Can Have Fans for Your Business
1,000 people
Patreon supporters who donate an average of $5 per month = $5,000/month in income
1,000 people
You can pay $90K annually for a $90 annual membership to your software or membership website.
1,000 people
Your $200 online course is purchased by 200 people. This can translate into $200K in revenue.
Across many business models and price points, you’ll see that a group of just 1,000 core fans is enough to make a full time income.
1,000 fans. Not 100,000. Not 100,000. from you.
Get Off the Treadmill
If you’ve ever wondered why I just don’t care about social media, why I’m perfectly happy with a small number of YouTube subscribers and why I don’t have or pursue huge traffic numbers, this is it.
I don’t care because I’ve never had to care. I got off the treadmill long ago.
A business’s focus will change if it follows the 1,000 true supporters principle. It’s not about volume and grasping for more and ever more. Instead, it’s about creating something that can build a core group of fans and then investing heavily in serving that core group as best you can!
This is what I’ve been doing since 2010 and it has served me well all along.
Online marketing has seen many changes since 2010. Many things have changed in online marketing since 2010. However, if your goal is to create a core group and serve them well then many things have remained the same.
The things I did in 2010 in niche forums to grow a small fan base are fundamentally the same things I did in 2015 on my blog and the same things I’m doing now on my websites and on YouTube.
Now is the right time to get out of the online business rat-race and adopt a more effective approach.

Challenge44: The Shortest Way to Excellence
“Challenge44” This sounds a bit strange, right? This is why I have to tell you a story.
2015 was a difficult year for me.
My business was growing fast and I needed to hire a marketing team, so that I could offload some of the marketing work I’d been doing on my own.
However, it was frustrating to hire. I felt that the candidates I interviewed did not have the skills or the mindset I needed. They were all working in the same environment. “treadmill” paradigm. They were from within the system and I couldn’t see how I could get them to fit my unconventional approach.
So, I created an apprenticeship program. I taught a small group of people how to market an online business for 3 months.
It worked!
In fact, it worked so well that I used this apprenticeship model several times more, to get people’s skills upgraded in record time. Now, I have extensive hands-on experience with turning people around. from An average content creator becomes an exceptional content creator
Challenge44 is the culmination of all my experiences teaching marketing skills to students in challenging learning environments.
Challenge44 is:
1
My answer to your question is: “how can I learn to make outstanding content?”
2
The fastest route to wherever you want to go from “meh” Content that nobody cares about “OMG” Content that increases the number of fans.
Challenge44 can be used to elevate your content creation abilities or for your team members to increase their content creation capabilities. Audience from Scratch principles.
Why do I tell you this?
Because Challenge44 is included in Audience from Scratch course, at no extra cost.
What makes the difference? Audience from Scratch Is there a course that is different?
The Audience from Scratch This course is not your typical online course.
These are the reasons:
1) Use the Power of Mental Models
This course uses mental models in order to improve your ability to think clearly and make informed decisions regarding your online company. Mental models can be thought of as thinking tools, or as a way to improve your business. “software for your brain”. The course is structured in a way that doesn’t simply aim to add more information on top of what you already know. It aims to provide you with the tools and knowledge that will allow you to think critically and make informed decisions.
2) Pragmatic & Implementation Focused
It’s nice to learn new things, but just learning won’t get you better results for your business. That’s why this course is all about implementation. That’s why we provide loads of real-World examples will help you understand the basics of building blocks. This course has great value. from what you’ll do differently, not just from A bunch of video lectures.
3) Growth & Leverage – Get the Best of Both Worlds
You now know that the entire Audience from Scratch The system was built on the principle that 1,000 true fans are needed. That means you don’t have to reach millions of people in order to be successful. What if you could learn the best strategies and tactics of brands that reach millions of people? What if you combined the best rapid and slow?-growth strategies with a model that doesn’t require that much growth? That’s what we call leverage and it’s a major focus in this course.
Warning! This is not a get-Rich-Rapid Business Opportunity
There are always people who sell quick money, shortcuts, and hacks in online marketing. There’s always some douchebag promising you the easy way to big riches, right after you max out your credit card on his or her latest bullshit product.
This nice red icon and this part of the page you’re looking at right now exists to make one statement as clearly as possible: THIS. IS. NOT. A. “BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY”.
This is not a quick fix. None of the numbers I’ve used in the examples above are to be construed as any kind of guarantee for income or results.
I don’t do get-rich-quick. What I’m offering here is actual, real-life, battle-tested business skill & knowledge. Entrepreneurship is essential if you are to succeed. It is up to you what you do with the course material.
If you don’t like that this sounds like you have to do actual work, now is a great time to leave this page.
Content is the key to shockingly effective content Audience Construction
The Audience from Scratch Course is all about content. In the course, you’ll learn exactly what it takes to make content that gets results.
It is, in fact, one of the best. “mental model” things. Once you’ve gone through the course, you’ll never see content the same way again. You’ll have x-You can see through ray vision when you read an article or watch a video. And you’ll understand exactly why one content piece gets loads of shares, comments and engagements and another gets ignored.
Why do we focus so much on content?
Simple truth: Content is all that can build an audience.
Download immediately Shane Melaugh – Audience from Scratch
You can get “traffic” Without much content. It is usually paid for. And for some business models, that’s all you need. If you’re a locksmith and you need people to find your phone number when they accidentally lock themselves out of their home or car, paying to get those eyeballs from A Google search for your phone number could be all you need.
Problems are common among people.”I’m locked out!”They pay you and you solve the problem. End of story.
That’s traffic, but it will never build an audience.
We must create something that people love to share with others in order to build an audience. You need to create something that people want to keep coming back to. Something that makes them feel. “I want more of this”.
And there’s a science to creating this kind of content.
This is the science behind the Audience from Scratch Courses teach. An audience is a growing asset that can pay off. If you’ve ever dreamed of being able to send out a single email to generate loads of sales, an audience is what you really wanted…
Website, YouTube & Beyond
Audience from Scratch is a course for content creators & for businesses that employ content creators.
The course focuses on two main channels: growing a audience on a website, blog, or YouTube and growing a audience using YouTube video content. The majority of the examples are either YouTube or website examples.
That’s because these are the 2 channels that I have focused on the most. This is where I have the most experience.
However, the course teaches basic principles of audience growth. These are the tactics I used to grow my audience in online forums. Later, I used the same strategies to grow my blog’s fan base. Then I used the same content creation strategies to make videos that appeal to an audience.
These techniques have worked well for forum content, website contents and video content. These tactics have a proven track-record – they worked 10+ years ago, 5+ years ago, and they still work today. There’s no reason to think they won’t work for your podcast, for social media or for whatever other channels pop up in the coming years. This is all about understanding the psychology of people.
This being said, I recommend you to focus your growth efforts around a website and a mailinglist. And in the course, you’ll see why (and learn how).
Does that mean you have to be? “on stage” You want to be a celebrity and parade all over the Internet?
Perhaps you are thinking: Sure, having a fan base would be nice. It sounds great to have lots and lots of people who are eager to purchase more stuff.
However, that is not what you want. You don’t want to appear on video. You don’t want the whole personal branding thing. You want to be remembered by everyone? No.
I have good news for your! You don’t have to show your face.
Take a look at this:
It doesn’t make sense immediately, but I do know.
This is a post that I made on a forum. from Tested different radiator types. This was many years ago. It is the reason I was still active on the computer hardware market.
Notice what’s missing: My face. Or even my real name.
When I first started building an online audience, all I needed was a username and a few forum posts. Completely anonymous. I created an audience for my brand and not for myself, the person.
Since then I have done a lot of personal brand work and now I use a lot video. However, what I teach in this class is: Audience from Scratch It is not. “personal branding”. You don’t need to have video and can work anonymously. This is not about becoming famous or putting your name out there.
However, if you really want to achieve that, you can use these strategies.
