Stan Tatkin, PsyD – Uncovering Deception In Couple Therapy
Psychobiologically-oriented couple therapists know that intersubjective and phenomenological processes in primary attachment relationships depend heavily on fast-acting implicit memory systems. This phenomenon means that partners in a relationship don’t always know what they’re doing, or why. They conjure up meanings in the absence of any real understanding. Couple therapy partners often have hidden agendas and resort to deceit in order not to lose their partner. The couple therapist must find out who the partners are, their true desires, and what they’re up to in the first session. In This workshop will teach us how to accept that deception in couple therapy is normal human behavior. It also teaches us how to use specialized techniques to help our partners to clarify their goals and to work together to achieve secure functioning.
