Steven C.Hayes – ACT in practice 2022
Be confident when you apply ACT From Intake to Treatment
For effective use, create a framework
To foster lasting change, acceptance and commitment therapy is key.
The gap between theory and practice
It’s one thing to know the ACT Model and its principles in The abstract.
It’s another to implement them in a way that’s impactful and organic, especially when you’re sitting across from a challenging client and the clock is ticking.
Clients who are disengaged, resistant to change, or hold on to their goals of diminishing. “bad” Feelings are often a barrier to moving forward.
The theory may make conceptual sense in these situations. . .
It comes down to Apply ACT, they’re less confident.
Self-Doubt creeps in, and they hesitate to make their next move, questioning if it’s the best one to guide the client toward meaningful progress.
And this is in contrast to the expert sessions that clinicians offer in Many workshops share their experiences instead:
- They are comfortable with accepting and defusion but have difficulty finding the right exercise for themselves.-As-Avoid context in Sessions
- Sometimes they feel more like teachers than therapists. They rely on lecturing to introduce concepts rather than weaving experiences into sessions.
- They are unsure how to help clients who are challenging them, and feel stuck.
- They may be reluctant to encourage clients to talk about difficult feelings or thoughts for fear of demotivating them, but ultimately end up on different pages regarding their therapeutic goals.
- Instead of being flexible to the moment, they approach sessions with rigid expectations about what next.
Such experiences are quite common amongst people. ACT practitioners.
Even skilled clinicians can feel uncertain when tailoring treatments for particularly difficult clients — especially without resorting to cookie-Cutter interventions
But Why? This is possible when we have seen the model in action?
This is not a simple matter of doing more of the same. It’s about the heart of this approach.
The ACT Therapeutic Paradox
The very victory of ACT It has been in We are moving away from strict protocols and into a more traditional, inclusive tradition.
However, it presents clinicians a paradoxical situation:
This broadening our horizons is, on the one hand empowering. This allows us to tailor our approach. People Instead of going blindly, learn from the process and not just look at it. “by the book,” crossing our fingers, and hoping that what we’re doing will work.
However, it can make us feel lost. How do we skillfully dial without any protocols? in The theoretical model that best suits the needs of a specific person. in One moment in particular in The context of their overall therapy?
It is difficult to know how to do this.
It’s a high-level skill — especially when it comes to complex cases.
This paradox raises a surprising question:
Is there an application formula? ACT?
It’s natural that we would, in the face of lack of direction, be able to provide evidence-For those who are based practitioners, you can request a formula for applying ACT.
We search for situations that are exact copies of things.
But, we also abandoned protocols. in the first place, a formula for therapy won’t help us achieve better outcomes.
Instead of using a formula to apply ACTWe need the tools to creatively translate it into useful interventions.
Fortunately, with a set of newly expanded tools that I’m about to introduce, we can create a guide for using ACT This method allows clients to communicate effectively while retaining the flexibility it was created for. in It is the first.
This is in many ways the ultimate goal of evidence-Since the beginning, based therapy has been a part of our lives. And now, it’s finally coming to fruition.
A Framework to Put Theory into Action
Recent work has seen me and Dr. Stefan Hofmann refine certain concepts and treatment methods.-Framework for application based on.
These tools allow us to better understand our clients throughout the therapeutic relationship. ACT perspective.
Most importantly, we are more likely to find intervention opportunities.
We can use a modified client version to help us organize this view.-Diagramming a network based on data.
We can use network diagramming to establish a foundation for a process-A based assessment is used to establish the relationships between case characteristics in We should be able to see ourselves in a way that is transparent How Why? Pathologies should be kept in a specific context.
This analysis can also be used to determine where changes are occurring in conjunction with maladaptive behaviors.
This helps us to see the long-term goals we should be aiming for.-To define success, create a plan. This strategy can be organized using network diagramming.
The tools in this new framework together allow us to gain a better understanding of our clients and create tailor-made solutions.-made therapies — all in a way that’s firmly grounded in ACT principles.
What is a Process?-The Based Framework helps you apply ACT More Effectively
1.It encourages you to think flexiblely instead of linearly.
Life is not made up of just a handful of events. in a linear fashion. Therapy is not linear. in That can lead to a dead-end.
But linear thinking is so ingrained in Our culture and training can be characterized as a flexible approach. However, it can feel disconnected if not guided by tangible tools.
With the tools in our process-Instead of focusing on the underlying causes of behavior, we can see how they reinforce and amplify themselves using a framework. in loops.
Imagine a client suffering from chronic pain after an injury at work.-Opiates. It’s easy to see her pain and the growing addiction to opiates.
The linear sequence of however, injury → pain → opiate Use may block out other important case features, such as how the injury impacted her financial stability, or how her father’s Alzheimer’s has fed fear and fusion in her life.
It is possible to see behavior patterns with network diagrams
This framework can be used to achieve a non-profitable outcome.-linear perspective of a client’s case, you can develop a more nuanced understanding of their behavior and make a better plan to intervene.
2.It allows you turn case complexity into opportunity
When you’re struggling to apply ACT principles in-session, it’s difficult to know how to intervene in the moment and at the same time know that it’s tied to long-Long-term success.
A process-This framework is able to see behavior patterns in the context that supports them. The holistic view of the case will allow you to better understand it and see where you can intervene if you are unable to succeed. in therapy.
This framework allows for us to approach therapy strategically, just like a game.
For example, while you may identify a crucial experiential avoidance pattern and see an opening to target it with acceptance, you’ll also see options to alter that same core patterns using other processes.
This framework also allows you to see strengths — instances of psychological flexibility — that you can build up as part of a holistic treatment strategy.
Recently, I was reminded of this important thinking by a client who had recently attempted to undermine intimacy. in Her relationships.
Expanding my focus led me to a fusion of myself.-image, only visible at work, that she was “likely to break under pressure.” After you have started to employ yourself-She was able to do vulnerability work through compassion and defusion, which focused on her sense of self. in relationships.
In other words, you can approach therapy like a game.
Instead of thinking one move at a time, you’re visualizing a way to win the whole game.
3.It offers a clear path to work with lasting impact.
This process is not a protocol or a formula.-The framework is based on the client’s therapeutic goals.
It will help you understand the case better and give you a clearer idea of what questions to ask.
This tool allows you to map out the psychological flexibility model on case features to find the best intervention opportunities.
It allows you to plan treatment based upon what is most likely for each client.
And even after you begin implementing that treatment strategy, it gives you a reference point to help you see when things are moving — or to make a new plan if they aren’t.
This will enable you to pivot more easily and, if necessary, it can help you answer the question. “What have I missed about how a certain behavior is being retained?”
This question was one I needed to ask. in work with a client where I’d initially failed to think through how new actions would be self-sustained.
These are the best ways to make a lasting impression in Your work with clients
I saw values as an endpoint. The client would need mindful attentional skills in order to recognize progress and when to act upon those values. in building values-Habits that are based on the mind. Focusing more on attentional skills makes it easier to sustain positive outcomes.
These are the most difficult things to see. in A case but with a process-We can identify them easier and adjust our approach more quickly using a framework.
Once you understand how to use the tools within this framework, you’ll come to your very next session with a clearer pathway in Your head and the psychological flexibility model built into it.
That way, you’ll be able to more strategically bring about lasting change.
Learn the Approach
I hope you’re starting to understand how this expanded process-Ground can be made easier with a framework ACT Theory in Practical application to make it easier for you to use it creatively, confidently, effectively, and efficiently.
This is the framework in It is best to take action and practice it yourself to learn how it works. in Your own sessions.
And that’s exactly what I’m about to share with you.
You will find all the details for my online course which builds on your existing knowledge. ACTIt teaches practical tools and shows how to use them. in sessions.
Inside, we’re going to bring the philosophical visions of process-It is all about how to perform an intake, how you can do a different diagnosis, how you can do a functional assessment, how to design a therapy, and how to deal with any other issues. in Your daily work.
