How much time are you willing to spend?
Tom, a Residential Architect, shared with me a familiar tale about his attempt to learn SketchUp.
I heard so many good things about SketchUp. SketchUp is a favorite tool for architects, and I decided it was time to give the program a shot.
My goal was to be able design homes in SketchUp, and then to create LayOut construction documents.
Tom’s SketchUp Goal
“Everyone told me SketchUp was simple to use, so I downloaded it and started to model my house.
I did pretty well, until I had to stop trying to model the roof.
After struggling with SketchUp for a while, I decided to search the internet for help and found this video tutorial.
I was able follow the steps and achieve the result I desired, so I continued modeling my house.
However, progress was slowing down.
I was closer to finishing the model the more I became stuck. I had to look online for help.
I finally reached the point where my SketchUp model looked pretty good. I thought, “Not too bad for my first SketchUp experience.”
However, the first time I used it on my job was quite different.
Because I was under a tight deadline, all aspects of the model had to be correct. I also needed SketchUp to allow me to make changes to the design.
“I was way too high.”

Tom’s emotional state
Tom’s situation is both extremely common and completely avoidable.
Alex Oliver, Founder & Lead Instructor
I’m Alex, the founder and lead instructor at SketchUp School. SketchUp has been taught online and in person for more than a decade. I have personally taught SketchUp to thousands of professionals.
We have developed and refined many classes for professionals over the past 10+ years.
Students who have learned SketchUp are a common occurrence in our advanced classes. These students are often struggling in our advanced classes, as they are trying to improve their professional skills on a weak base.
This is the biggest mistake people make when learning SketchUp.
You can avoid what happened to Tom by following the right approach.

What happened to Tom?
Tom was frustrated with his first real-world project and realized that he had to learn SketchUp. That’s when he found SketchUp School, and saw we had a video course in our library that sounded perfect.
After he signed in, one of our instructors reached back to him and they had a discussion about what he wanted to learn and how much experience with SketchUp he had.
Tom initially planned to move straight to the advanced courses. However, the instructor recommended that Tom review the lessons in the Intro to SketchUp.
“This is such an amazing course – I’ve finally learned the right way to build a SketchUp model that’s organized and flexible to edit. Already, I’ve saved tons of time and headaches! I look forward to even more ways to expand my SketchUp arsenal. You have a good thing going for sure.”
Tom learned SketchUp from the basics and didn’t waste time in advanced courses. Tom was able to quickly get through the basics and jump into the course that caught his interest.
Tom now works in SketchUp on all of his projects (and it’s a good life).
